Fantastic Frank's

Vienna sausages might be a favorite childhood snack, but the food also faces negative perception. To combat consumer concerns regarding canned meats, Fantastic Frank’s packaging targets kids while appealing to parents as a convenient and safe snack option with a brand that emphasizes the charming, friendly appeal of Vienna sausages.

Form and Materials

The traditional can is replaced with a flexible retort pouch, due to the safety hazard of sharp metal. The pouch requires less energy to produce and has less material to be processed after use. The milk carton form recalls that childhood nostalgia while appealing to kids with a fun, familiar shape. The flexible material allows the child to easily tear away the top, fold down the sides, and eat the sausages out of a single-serve container. The small size can be easily held or included in a lunch box.

Process

Fantastic Frank's was a team project completed for the 2018 Institute of Packaging Professionals 48 Hour Repack competition. The brief challenged us to repackage shelf-stable meat in a way that elevated the product. Our team selected Vienna sausages to repackage after discovering several shared childhood memories surrounding Vienna sausages as a favorite snack. Our team included Iliana Taylor, Neha Biluve, and myself.
